What can we as engineers make with everyday materials?
Let’s create a simple grabber that can extend and grab something!
By the end of this activity, and some parental assistance, you will have a fun tool to help fetch things from afar!
Activity
In the activity, you will construct a grabber out of cardboard.
How far can it extend? Will longer cardboard strips help? What can be used to help grab with it?
Materials
- Cardboard
- Toothpicks
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Tape or Glue

Instructions

Step 1
Cut cardboard sheet into same-length sections, 4 inches each.

Step 2
Repeat 6 times and cut out a toothed part to be the grabbing section

Step 3
Connect the strips together using toothpicks, overlapping parts as shown, trim to size.

Step 4
Tape or glue the toothy sections to the end of the grabber
